Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Tavern Scene, attributed to James Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA, circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with an elaborate stenciled design of three men drinking around a table. One figure depicted with stocking cap and arm resting over the back of the chair, another raises a bottle and glass, and a third falls backward clutching a glass and his feathered hat. One of a small group of James Hamilton jugs known bearing this iconic motif. Provenance: Recently surfaced in Western Maryland. Spout chips. In-the-firing stacker marks to shoulder. Minor base chipping, including a small glazed-over base chip. Traces of staining to surface. Some spalling to cobalt slip. H 11 3/4".
