Outstanding Ten-Gallon Stoneware Open-Handled Water Cooler with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Inscribed "1839 / Nov," attributed to Brotherton and Davidson, Baltimore, MD, 1839, ovoid cooler with semi-squared rim, two open, vertical handles applied at the shoulder, and octagonal bunghole at base; brush-decorated on the front with a lavish, two-stemmed flowering plant motif featuring wisteria-like blossoms, flanking the date, "Nov 1839," and on the reverse with a triple-stemmed clover plant in the classic Baltimore style. Heavy cobalt highlights to handle terminals and area surrounding bunghole. An extraordinary work in terms of size, form, decoration, color, and condition. Few dated examples of Baltimore stoneware are known. Provenance: Recently surfaced on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 20".
