Large-Sized Stoneware Inkwell with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, attributed to Nathan Clark, Sr., Athens, NY, circa 1825-1835, cylindrical form with coved sides, the top surface with recessed opening and three quill holes. Brushed foliate motifs to top and around the body. Cobalt-highlighted coggled decoration to base, shoulder, top edge, and surrounding the central opening. A small pierced hole is formed beside the opening, likely added for air flow. A good example of a Clark master ink, featuring the potter's distinctive coggling and brushed designs. A small, partially glazed-over base chip. An adjacent minor chip on underside. A 3/4" rim chip and a few tiny in-the-firing rim chips. H 2 7/8" ; Diam. 6 3/8".
