Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Flag Decoration, Midwestern origin, probably OH, circa 1876, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated with an incised, cobalt-highlighted design of an American flag with pennant atop its finial and twisted rope around the pole, the base of the design flanked by slip-trailed leaves. Underscored slip-trailed "2" at shoulder. Glazed-over scratch marks underlying the front of the flag indicate the decorator had begun another design and carved it away prior to drawing the flag. Two chips to reverse, measuring 1 3/4" and 1 1/4". Chips to one handle. A small chip to interior of rim. Light staining throughout. H 9".
