Scarce One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Deer Decoration, Stamped "L. LEHMAN & CO / WEST 12TH ST NY," Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a prancing deer atop a vine motif embellished with shrub-like elements. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A fine rendering of the distinctive Macquoid/Lehman deer motif executed in stronger cobalt than is typically seen from this pottery, adorning a desirable small-sized jar. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor in September, 1989 from Betty and Joel Schatzberg, Riverside, CT. Chips to inner rim for lid. Some scattered, in-the-firing granular black flecking to surface. Tight cracks to underside including a few extending onto base area. Surface staining, primarily to sides and reverse. H 10 3/4".
