Very Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, mid to late 18th century, squat-shaped ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and squared rim, decorated around the shoulder with three slip-trailed "watch spring" motifs incorporating scalloped lines above and below. Exceptional ginger jar style form and desirable size. A thin jagged crack across underside forming a 4 1/2" Y-shape crack ascending from base. Additional short vertical lines to base area. A thin, inverted 3" cross-shaped crack from rim. Three small rim chips and some surface crazing to exterior of rim. Areas of staining to surface. H 6 3/4".
