Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to John Walker, probably OH or KY origin, circa 1840, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and arched handles with depressed terminals, the slip-coated surface brush-decorated with elaborate flowering vine motifs in the Alexandria / District of Columbia style. Foliate devices below one handle and on reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jar bears distinctive decoration indicating it was made by John Walker, a potter active in the District of Columbia circa 1830, after he had left the city. Walker later potted in Point Pleasant Ohio, working there with the famous Cornwall Kirkpatrick, and also in Frankfort, Kentucky. Subtle differences between this jar and examples of Walker's D.C. stoneware indicate this piece was made by him later in his career, in one of these states or possibly another undocumented area. Very nice condition with only in-the-firing flaws. In-the-firing chips to bottom edge and underside. In-the-firing clay residue to underside. Some in-the-firing clay and salt residue to shoulder and one handle. A shallow in-the-firing chip to one handle. H 11 1/2".
