Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed birds perched in the crook of stylized tree branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Extensive, partially-flaking restoration through much of crock including very bottom of decoration and area below and beside decoration. Most of cobalt untouched. Large area of reverse restored including large glued chip. Rim chips. H 10 1/4".
