Rare Large-Sized Redware Pitcher with Manganese Decoration, Signed "Backer / 1878," Anthony Bacher, Winchester, VA or Thurmont, MD, 1872, ovoid pitcher with narrow, flaring collar, the lead-glazed surface decorated with splashed manganese over a mottled orange ground. Underside incised with signature and date, "Backer / 1878." Exceptional size and unusual glaze scheme for this potter, lacking his typical cream-colored slip coating. Missing handle. H 11 3/4".
