Very Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Signed "LM," Lanier Meaders, Cleveland, GA, circa 1960s, ovoid jug with short spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face featuring orb-shaped eyes with lids set within recessed sockets, a rounded nose, and closed mouth with protruding, flattened lips. Surface covered in a mottled green alkaline glaze with black slip highlights forming the pupils. Underside signed with "L M" signature in black slip. This jug's initialed signature, style of glaze, and reductive modeling omitting ears and teeth, all date this work to Meaders's formative years of face jug production. Relatively few examples from this time period are known. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 8 1/4".
