Extremely Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug with Rock Eyes and Teeth, attributed to Cheever and Lanier Meaders, Cleveland, GA, circa 1967, ovoid jug with hand-modeled and applied clay face featuring two large rock eyes of different size and shape, each set within protruding lids, a snub nose, and smiling mouth with three rock teeth. Surface covered in a mottled olive-colored alkaline glaze. Likely a collaborative work by father, Cheever, and son, Lanier, the history of this piece strongly suggests it was one of the jugs made for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 1967. This example is noteworthy for the time in which it was made, its applied rock treatment, and immaculate condition. One of the finest Meaders family products known. Provenance: A recently-surfaced work, acquired by the consignor from a home in Washington, D.C. in 1983. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing separation to lid of proper left eye. H 8 3/4".
