Rare Albany-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug with Mustache, attributed to Davis Pennington Brown, Brown Pottery, Arden, NC, circa 1930, ovoid jug with tall spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face featuring bulging eyes set within flattened lids, angled eyebrows, raised nose with carved nostrils, rare mustache, open mouth with applied broken china teeth, and large, rounded ears. Incised details to eyes, eyebrows, and mustache. Surface covered in an underfired Albany slip glaze. Unmarked. This jug is the first Brown Pottery example of this size that we have offered depicting the face with a mustache. Similarities between the face on this jug and oversized devil jugs made by Davis Pennington Brown (1895-1967) lead to a firm attribution to his hand. Provenance: Acquired from an old museum collection, this jug includes an old collection catalog number on underside. Excellent condition with a small chip to one ear and various small spots of wear. H 6 3/4".
