Rare Two-Piece Salt-Glazed Stoneware Lion's Head Urn on Base, possibly Thomas Family, Huntingdon, PA, fourth quarter 19th century, ovoid-bellied urn with tall, flaring collar, applied ring handles at the shoulder and two molded lion's heads to the body, resting on a separate pedestal base with incised sine-wave decoration. The color of the clay is reminiscent of pieces produced by members of the Thomas family of potters in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, offering one possible theory on the maker of this ambitious work. Urn itself in excellent condition with traces of old white and red paint. Pedestal with traces of old white paint, several base chips, and a 6 1/4" x 2 5/8" loss to the flat, wheel-thrown underside of the pedestal. H 20 1/2".
