Eight-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "A.O. WHITTEMORE / HAVANA. N. Y," circa 1870, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed floral motif featuring two tulips and hanging grape-like clusters. Slip-trailed twice with an underscored "8." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Exceptional size and excellent color. Some fry to cobalt. Faint traces of water glass staining to surface. Some darker staining to collar and spots of staining to reverse. Chips to inner rim for lid. Tight surface lines in underside, not visible on interior. Some minor exfoliation at base. H 19 5/8".
