Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Impressed Fish Motif, attributed to Jonathan Fenton, Boston, MA, late 18th century, highly-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder, tall neck, and semi-squared spout, decorated with a large impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a heavily-scaled fish. Among the largest Fenton fish jugs that we have offered. Essentially as-made condition with some in-the-firing flaws: an approximately 2 3/8" x 2 1/2" in-the-firing chip below fish's tail; a faint, approximately 3" Y-shaped line to right of fish; some in-the-firing chipping to top of spout; two small in-the-firing surface flakes (contact marks) to fish's face; a 1" in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder on reverse; a minor in-the-firing contact mark at base on reverse. H 16 1/4".
