Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird and Banner Decoration, Inscribed "Boston Mass 1887," Northeastern U.S. origin, 1887, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flying bird facing a series of spotted, grass-like strokes, above the inscription, "Boston Mass / 1887," with opposing scrolled motifs below. Outstanding decoration. A 9" crack from rim on front. A 7" diagonal crack on side of crock extending through proper right handle, including a chip to handle. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing fissure to exterior of rim on side of crock. Chips to exterior of rim. A small chip to interior of rim. Some wear to handles. Staining to surface. H 12 3/4".
