Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Double Grapes Decoration, Stamped "CHARLESTOWN," Barnabas Edmands, Charleston, MA, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large undulating vine bearing two clusters of grapes and four leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A 4 1/4" crack from rim. A 9 1/4" crack from rim on reverse. Minor chips to interior of rim. A small chip to one handle. Several short, vertical surface lines at base, not visible on interior and possibly in-the-firing. Some mottling to surface. A small base chip on front and other minor base chips. An in-the-firing ping to interior wall of jar and two flakes to Albany slip on interior base. H 13 3/4".
