Scarce One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Rooster Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a rooster standing on a detailed ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor at Denlinger Auctions, Bennington, VT, October 21, 1990. Literature: Illustrated in Leder and Cesana, The Birds of Bennington; listed in this book as extremely rare (one to three known) at the time of its publication in 1991. Some exfoliation to shoulder on front, base on proper right side of jar, and shoulder on reverse. Two small flakes to base area on reverse. An in-the-firing contact mark to wing and belly area of bird. A 3/8" chip to proper left handle. A 3/4" vertical surface line at base on reverse, not visible on interior. Tiny nicks and wear to inner rim for lid. H 10 3/4".
