Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Caterpillar and Floral Motif, Stamped "H. PURDY," OH origin, mid 19th century, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, brush-decorated with a stylized spotted design resembling a caterpillar with spotted flower above. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Made by Henry Purdy, who had a shorter-lived potting career than his father, Solomon, eventually becoming the Mayor of Akron. Provenance: Robert and Nancy Treichler Collection, Tallmadge, OH. A 1 1/2" flake to top of spout and a 1/2" adjacent chip to interior of spout. Surface wear. What appear to be cracks on the reverse and below the floral design are actually long, glazed-over scratches in the clay created prior to firing. H 16 1/2".
