Four-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, probably Howe & Clark, Athens, NY, circa 1805-1813, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and back with a slip-trailed "bulls eye" floral motif related to designs found on marked "HOWE & CLARK / ATHENS" pieces. The jar's atypical open handles suggest a particularly early date of manufacture. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Chipping around bottom edge. A thin 2" crack from rim. A tight 6" spider crack to one side. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing fissure to interior of rim. A 3/4" rim chip. H 13 1/2".
