Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "ATHENS," probably Thomas Howe and Nathan Clark, Sr., Athens, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jar with footed base, flared collar, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a fan-shaped floral motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The first example of stoneware bearing the "ATHENS" stamp that we have offered. This elusive mark is possibly the earliest from that city, likely used by partners Thomas Howe and Nathan Clark, Sr. A jug with related decoration, stamped "HOWE & CLARK / ATHENS," resides in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Rim and base chips. A sliver-shaped in-the-firing contact mark to shoulder. A glazed-over 1 1/2" in-the-firing flake to underside, connecting to a smaller glaze-over chip at bottom edge. A short, faint surface line at base. H 12".
