Very Rare Stoneware Presentation Fruit Jar, Incised "Peach" and "RMC," attributed to Nathan Clark, Sr., Athens, NY, early 19th century, cylindrical jar with tapered shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, featuring the incised and cobalt-highlighted word, "Peach," on one side and the ornately-incised initials, "RMC," on the reverse. These initials likely refer to an as-yet-unidentified relative of Clark for whom the jar was made. One possibility is that this piece was made for Clark's parents, Reuben and Mary Clark. Only a small body of early presentation work by Clark has survived, all bearing related finely-penned initials. Provenance: Warren F. Hartmann Collection. Excellent condition. A small glazed-over base chip. Clay residue to underside at edge. A minor base chip and some extremely minor base wear. Some very minor surface wear. H 9 3/4".
