Very Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Belleville, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "A. WILLIAMSON. / GENERAL / MERCHANDISE, / BELLEVILLE. WEST VA." surrounding a small stenciled vine motif. Freehand stripe decoration to upper body and base. Base with stenciled "2" flanked by stylized stenciled floral devices. Highly unusual town name and uncommon full spelling of "WEST" in "WEST VA." Provenance: From a fifty year West Virginia collection. Hairlines in underside, one connecting to a 4 1/2" horizontal line at base. Some staining. A tiny nick to shoulder molding on reverse. Some wear to cobalt. H 12 1/8".
