Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Ravenswood, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "H.L. VANMATRE. / & CO. / DRY GOODS AND / GROCERIES, / QUEEN'S AND STONEWARE / RAVENSWOOD. W. VA." Block stenciling to base of advertising and stenciled tulip motifs above. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Base with freehand "2" flanked by flourishes. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. Very nice condition with a very shallow 1 1/4" flake to underside at edge, a very minor in-the-firing chip to bottom edge, some light surface wear, and some wear to cobalt. H 11 1/2".
