Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1880, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with a large undulating vine bearing two flowers and numerous graduated leaves, above a freehand "4" flanked by diagonal dashes. Stripe decoration to shoulder, body, and base. Highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. Areas of fry to cobalt. One handle with a large, 1 3/4" glazed-over chip and minor chip. Other handle with a small chip. A few small chips to interior of rim. Some typical light wear to inner rim for lid. Grease staining to surface. A 3" Y-shaped line to midsection on reverse, not visible on interior. H 16".
