Very Rare Stoneware Urn with Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA or WV origin, Dated 1894, rotund form with tooled rim, brush-decorated below the rim with a spotted drape motif, at the shoulder with a series of tulips, and around the midsection with a wavy stripe accented with spots. Underside inscribed with the large cobalt date, "1894," underscored by cobalt dashes. Two small drain holes at the base appear to be original to the vessel. Exceptional form and unusual cobalt date. A recessed area to shoulder. Two large in-the-firing contact marks at midsection, one including an adhered piece of clay. A small glazed-over rim chip. A small base chip. Some chipping to drain holes, primarily on interior. H 11".
