Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "From / James Hamilton & Co. / Greensboro, Pa.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated at the shoulder with undulating vines between freehand stripes, the lower stripe flanked by a series of dashes. Further decorated below with highly unusual freehand daisy motifs flanking a stenciled James Hamilton maker's mark. Cobalt-script "2" at base, flanked by slashes. A beautiful example of Western Pennsylvania freehand decoration. A 5/8" chip to side of rim. Staining to surface, primarily on reverse. Minor traces of old paint to surface, unrelated to any sort of restoration. H 11 3/4".
