Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Ship Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, probably Parr & Burland, circa 1820, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with a large design of a sailing ship with crew aboard, below a stemmed daisy motif around the shoulder. Featuring outstanding color characteristic of Baltimore's earliest cobalt-decorated stoneware, this work is one of only a few ship-decorated pieces known from this maritime city. A significant recent discovery. A 6 1/2" hairline ascending from base. A faint 2 3/4" Y-shaped surface line near shoulder, not visible on interior. A 1" chipped section to underside at edge. H 10 3/4".
