Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES.UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with turned head, spotted body, and fan-shaped tail, perched atop a stylized vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Front with a tiny surface flake to shoulder and some surface flakes to base. A small amount of flaking to underside. Two small flakes to one handle. A 5" crack from rim on reverse. H 11 5/8".
