Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, N.Y.," circa 1885, cylindrical crock with tooled body, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird with turned head, striped body, and paddle-shaped tail, perched on a stylized vine. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark and capacity mark. The design on this crock is only the second of its kind that we have offered, depicting a combination of earlier White's "running" bird motifs with the family's later paddletail bird designs. Desirable, smallish size to crock. Chips to interior of rim. An in-the-firing unglazed spot to base on front. A small chip to one handle. Two small base chips on reverse. A 1" flake to underside at edge of crock's front. Some surface staining. H 8".
