Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "LYONS," Thompson Harrington, Lyons, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a tulip plant with heavy cobalt application to the edges of the petals and leaves. Slip-trailed twice with a number "2" at shoulder. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A 2 1/4" line on underside extending 2" up base on front. A sealed U-shaped crack at base on front, which includes a minor 3/8" reglued flake and some chipping. A small surface chip and minor in-the-firing ping near base on front. Three small chips to exterior of rim and three small chips to inner rim for lid. A 1 3/4" x 1" base chip with a 1 3/4" surface crack ascending from it. Two faint vertical 1" surface lines at base on reverse, not visible on interior. Some light wear to cobalt. A few small spots of light staining. Small spots of exfoliation to exterior surface. Crazing and exfoliation to underside. Areas of spalling to the Albany slip on interior. H 10 7/8".
