Rare and Fine Stoneware Jar with Two-Color Slip and Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS, / NEW-YORK," early 19th century, small-sized, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and flared rim, the front featuring the cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of John Remmey III surrounded by an incised border formed with a two-pronged stylus. Reverse with incised flower blossom motif filled with blackish slip, likely composed of cobalt and manganese. Exceptional size, unusual form and strong decoration. Rim chips. Exfoliation to interior base, extending partway up interior wall of jar. A Y-shaped surface line to interior base, not visible on exterior. Base chips, one of which is glazed over. Large flakes to underside. A 2" curved surface line on underside, continuing a short distance onto base, not visible on interior. A 3/4" surface line on underside, continuing 2 1/4" up base, not visible on interior. A 7/8" flake near base on side of jar. H 9 1/2".
