Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK & CO / LYONS," NY State origin, circa 1839-1851, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a double-stemmed tulip plant featuring open and closed blossoms. Brushed "2" above. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes fitting salt-glazed stoneware lid, impressed "2," of Northeastern origin. A 1 3/4" rim chip, which appears to have occurred in the firing. Other small, shallow in-the-firing chips to top of rim. A small in-the-firing iron ping to top of rim. Two very minor vertical lines at base on reverse, measuring 1" and 3/4". A minor in-the-firing chip to underside at edge. Lid in excellent condition with minor water glass staining. H (excluding lid) 11 1/4".
