Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed birds perched in the crook of stylized tree branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Two small chips to one handle. A minor nick to opposite handle. A semi-circular in-the-firing separation line on underside, not visible on interior. A 5/8" in-the-making base chip. A 1 1/8" base flake on reverse. Two small chips to interior of rim. Three minor nicks to inner rim for lid. Some light surface wear. H 11".
