Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A long, thin crack on underside, extending 7" up front of jar to left of bird. A tiny flake to shoulder on far right side of jar's front. A minor chip to one handle and a small chip to opposing handle. A 1 1/4" surface line below one handle and a 4" X-shaped surface line on reverse, both of which do not appear to be visible on interior. Some light water glass staining to exterior surface, stronger on interior of jar. A small chip and a few minor nicks to interior of rim. Chipping around inner rim for lid. H 12 3/8".
