Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Boston, MA Advertising, attributed to Somerset Potters Works, Somerset, MA, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jug with flared spout, decorated with a large, abstract slip-trailed floral motif accented with spots. Shoulder impressed with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "P NORTON & CO / 4 CANAL BLOCK / BLACKSTONE ST / BOSTON." Spout chips. A 2 3/4" X-shaped line to shoulder, emanating from a tiny surface chip. An in-the-firing chip to top of handle. Light surface wear. A 1 7/8" in-the-firing base chip. Two chips to underside at edge. A small plaster-filled hole or ping on reverse. A very minor plaster-filled nick to near shoulder on side of jug. Minor in-the-firing flaws, including a contact mark to shoulder and a small piece of adhered clay to front. Some old plaster residue to interior of spout. H 18 1/2".
