Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "C.W. BRAUN / BUFFALO.N.Y.," circa 1870, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a very large slip-trailed design of a bird with raised wings, spiraling body, and profuse feather detail throughout, perched on a spotted vine. Shoulder with slip-trailed "4." underscored by flourishes. An outstanding example featuring excellent color, the first Braun piece decorated in this manner that we have seen. A 1 3/8" rim chip. Small chips to interior of rim. Light wear to top of rim. Light wear to edge of each handle and a small chip to one handle. A 2 1/4" Y-shaped surface line to side of crock, not visible on interior. A 2 3/4" vertical line to mdisection on front. Some staining to surface. A 2 5/8" x 1 5/8" flake to underside at edge. A 1 1/4" x 7/8' chip to bottom edge. A 5/8" chip to bottom edge. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to bottom edge. A 3" Y-shaped surface line to reverse, not visible on interior. H 11 1/2".
