Glazed Stoneware Face Jug with China Eyes and Teeth, Stamped "E.J. BROWN," Evan Javan Brown, Sr., Arden, NC, second quarter 20th century, ovoid jug with cylindrical spout, decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including eyes fitted with broken china pieces, curved ears with pierced interiors, upswept nose with carved nostrils, and open mouth with broken china teeth. Surface covered in a metallic chocolate-brown glaze. Underside impressed with E.J. Brown maker's mark. Provenance: Carl and Marian Mullis Collection; On long-term loan to Colonial Williamsburg, 2019 to 2023. Very nice condition. Chips to lower lip. Some wear to lids on one eye and one ear. A few minor in-the-firing chips to underside at edge. Two minor in-the-firing nicks to handle. H 6 3/4".
