Very Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "HUGH SMITH & CO.," Alexandria, VA origin, circa 1822-1825, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and upward-angled tab handles, brush-decorated on the front with a flowering plant featuring a circular blossom with leaves emanating to the left and right. Foliate motif to reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Among the earliest and rarest Alexandria, Virginia maker's marks. Heavy chipping to foot. A thin 5 3/4" crack from rim on reverse. A 1 1/4" rim chip on reverse. A 5/8" chip to one handle. H 11 1/4".
