Very Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stamped "J. SWANN / ALEXA," VA origin, circa 1820, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and curved tab handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with pairs of stylized leaves extending from handle to handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Few cobalt-decorated examples of Swann stoneware are known. Losses to handles. A 1 1/2" x 1 3/4" broken and reglued piece below one handle. Minor surface wear. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Virginia collection. H 9 1/4".
