Rare Copper-Decorated Redware Urn with Applied Wing Handles, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA origin, circa 1890, ovoid form with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, flared and coggled rim, and applied molded handles in the form of wings; brush-decorated in a lead-and-copper glaze on the front and reverse with a swag-and-hanging-flower motif, applied over whitish slip. The light copper content of the glaze has resulted in an original yellowish color to the glaze. Original drain hole in interior base. The outdoor use of such pieces typically resulted in a damaged vessel. A 2 5/8" x 1 1/2" filled loss to rim. Rim chips. Significant, sometimes deep, exfoliation to surface, underside, and interior base. Old penciled code at shoulder. H 14 5/8".
