Small-Sized Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Lid, Both Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, wide, cylindrical form with squared rim and ribbed lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a dotted tulip motif. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes original lid with matching dotted tulip decoration, impressed with John Bell maker's mark on underside. Excellent size. Provenance: From a forty-year private collection. Crock in very nice condition with a 2 1/4" hairline from rim, minor in-the-firing chip to rim, a small in-the-firing chip to one handle, and two very minor in-the-firing chips to underside at edge. Lid with a 3/4" x 1/4" filled section to knob. Dimensions (of crock): H 4 1/2" x 6 5/8". Diam. (of lid): 6 3/4".
