Rare Stoneware Jug with Coggled Bird-and-Leaf Motif, Stamped "BRANDY," attributed to Branch Green, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1820, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a coggled design of a bird with leaf in its mouth, brushed over in cobalt slip. While pieces stamped WINE, RUM, OIL, and GIN can be found on Branch Green's coggle-decorated stoneware, this jug is the first example that we have seen impressed "BRANDY." Three large, flattened in-the-firing contact marks around midsection, a small glazed-over base chip, and minor surface wear to reverse. H 11 1/4".
