Extremely Rare Stoneware Coffeepot with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Henry Harrison Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1835, ovoid form with tall collar and wheel-thrown and applied pouring spout with perforation on interior, brush-decorated around the spout with a two-stemmed plant bearing tassel-shaped flowers and additional vine decoration spanning the length of the spout. Left side of pot decorated with an elaborate two-stemmed tulip plant and right side decorated with a single-stemmed tulip motif. Horizontal floral motif around the shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a large swag decoration at base of handle. Teapots and coffeepots are among the rarest utilitarian forms known in American stoneware. We are aware of only one other related form produced by the Remmey family, a tea or coffeepot produced several decades later by Remmey's son, Richard Clinton Remmey. This lot typifies the style of Henry Harrison Remmey in its extravagant brushwork and darker gray clay, found on pieces made shortly after his arrival in Philadelphia from Baltimore. If intact, this object would rank among the more significant examples of early Philadelphia stoneware known. Provenance: Excavated in Philadelphia. Pete Haggarty Collection. Significant loss to spout. Missing handle. A small chip to underside and adjacent small chip to base. A 2 1/2" diagonal line at base. H 10".
