Rare and Fine Moravian Redware Chicken Caster with Whieldon-Type Glaze, Salem, NC origin, early 19th century, molded figure of a standing chicken on mound base with two different impressed eyes and elaborate incised details to tail and wings, the bird's neck with original piercings. Surface covered in cream-colored slip, decorated with streaks of manganese and copper, and covered in a clear lead glaze. An excellent example of a form typically found with moderate to significant damage, featuring the most desirable glaze treatment in the Moravian tradition. Provenance: Brunk Auctions, July, 2017. Very nice condition. Light wear to comb and minor wear to beak. Chips to underside of base, the largest measuring 3/4". A spot of glaze to bottom tip of bird's tail, visible when caster is turned over. An additional tiny fleck of glaze loss to edge of comb. H 4 1/4".
