Very Rare Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, probably William Morgan, possibly in partnership with Thomas Amoss, circa 1820, ovoid jar with footed base, tall cylindrical collar, and depressed open-loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with incised double-stemmed flowering plant motifs resembling bluebells or tulips. Cobalt highlights to incised decoration and handle terminals. Few examples of Baltimore stoneware with incised decoration are known. Significant sealed cracks in underside, including a 3 3/8" reglued piece on underside. One of the cracks on the underside continues up one of the decorated sides of the jar, forming a large Y. A 1 1/8" in-the-firing surface chip (contact mark) appears on the same side. A second Y-shaped crack extends from the underside to the midsection of the jar below one handle. A 1 1/4" filled section to base. A small glazed-over chip to interior of rim. H 14 1/2".
