Rare and Fine Half-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with PHILADELPHIA TEA HOUSE / Wheeling, WV Advertising, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO / PA.," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, stenciled on the front with the extensive advertising "PHILADELPHIA TEA H[OUSE] / CHRI[S] BEHRENS / PROPRIETOR / AND DEALER IN / GROCERIES FLOUR COUNTRY PRODUCE / & C. / 3601 JACOB AND 36 & 38 THIRTY SIXTH / STS., WHEELING, W. VA.". Reverse with the maker's stenciling, "HAMILTON & JONES / GREENSBORO / PA," surrounding a geometric star-like motif. An exceptional WV advertising piece featuring elaborate two-sided stenciling on a small-sized jar. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. A 2 1/4" hairline from rim on reverse. A glazed-over base chip. Some absent lettering in stenciling. H 8 1/4".
