Extremely Rare Small-Sized Redware Presentation Jar, Stamped "E ENTLER," Weis Pottery, Shepherdstown, WV, mid 19th century, cylindrical jar with footed base, tooled midsection, and semi-rounded rim, the exterior and interior coated in a speckled-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Impressed "E ENTLER" near base. Later painted floral decoration to surface. The 1850 U.S. Federal Census of Shepherdstown, West Virginia lists an "Ellen Entler," age 26, living next to potter, "George Wise," and his family. This jar was either made for Ellen Entler by a member of the Wise family or possibly even by Entler at their pottery. The small size, thick-walled construction, and somewhat misshapen rim suggest this piece was made by an unskilled potter trying their hand at the craft, possibly Entler herself. A significant recent discovery in Shenandoah Valley or West Virginia pottery. Provenance: Surfaced in the Shepherdstown, West Virginia area. Several small rim chips. H 4 5/8".
