Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Jackson Courthouse, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1880, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "A.W. KIDD & SONS. / DEALERS IN STOVES, / GRATES. / & GENERAL HARD WARE. / JACKSON C.H. W. VA." Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Freehand "4" with flourishes at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. Some light wear to cobalt. A glazed-over ping to right of stenciling. Rim is slightly out of round. In-the-making mottling to surface. H 15".
