Exceptional Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Crock with Ravenswood, WV Advertising, Palatine, WV origin, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "GO TO GEO. LEONARD / AND BUY / YOUR GOODS. / RAVENSWOOD / W. VA." Four stenciled two-gallon capacity marks surrounding the inscription indicate the crock was made in Palatine, West Virginia. This work's rare town name and use of an imperative slogan to the buyer rank it among the most outstanding examples of West Virginia advertising that we have offered in recent years. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. An approximately 6 1/4" crack on underside, continuing 2 1/4" up base to right of the stenciled "2" on the crock's far right side. H 9 1/2".
